This piece was named after Yasuke - a mysterious figure in Japanese history, who is also known as "the first African samurai", although he was never officially initiated into Samurai. Originally from Mozambique, he arrived in Japan in 1579 a slave with Jesuit missionaries. His striking appearance and stature attracted the attention of Oda Nobunaga, a powerful daimyo who became his lord. Yasuke quickly rose through the ranks due to his strength, loyalty, and martial prowess. He served Nobunaga during the Sengoku period, a time of social upheaval and war. Yasuke's unique story, although mostly unknown, is a fascinating historic chapter of cultural exchange and adaptation. It highlights his significant role in Japan's rich history, blending African heritage with the samurai tradition.
